Abstract

This study was carried out to investigate the effect of two step sequential application of fluoride on the dental caries and to develop anticarious ability of fluoride. The microhardness changes of enamel surface and enamel solubility were measured after application of fluoride on 6 groups of bovine teeth sample on which the artifical carious lesions were formed first. Test groups were classified into two step sequential application with NaF, SnF2 and APF under different application time conditions(group I , II, m, iv) and single application with APF(group V) and control(group VI).

The obtained results were as follows.

1. With regard to microhardness change of enamel surface, microhardness increments in group ( I (NaF for 1 minute + APF for 3 minutes), II (SnF2 for 1 minute + APF for 3 minutes)] were found to be greater than those of group (III (SnF2 for 2 minutes +APF for 2 minutes), IV (NaF for 2 minutes + APF for 2 minutes), V (APF for 4 minutes)) and group VI (negative control) (P (0.05).
2. With regard to enamel solubility, higher resistance to acid was detected in sequential application groups( I , II , III, N) compared with single application group V, but there was no significant

difference between sequential application and single application.
As concluded from above results little difference was found between sequential application and single application in association with enamel solubility, but generally sequential application showed a greater effect than single application in terms of microhardness of enamel surface.
